Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life
A step-by-step guide to writing and managing the writer’s life covers each portion of a written project, addresses such concerns as writer’s block and getting published, and offers awareness and survival tips. Reprint. Tour. K. NYT. Think you’ve got a book inside of you? Anne Lamott isn’t afraid to help you let it out. She’ll help you find your passion and your voice, beginning from the first really crummy draft to the peculiar letdown of publication. Readers will be reminded of the energizing books of writer Natalie Goldberg and will be seduced by Lamott’s witty take on the reality of a writer’s life, which has little to do with literary parties and a lot to do with jealousy, writer’s block and going for broke with each paragraph. Marvelously wise and best of all, great reading.

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life Reviews

This is not a how-to book. This is not a New Age manual for freeing your creativity in ethereal ways. This is Anne Lamott, for heaven’s sake…and that means it’s funny! As in, laugh- till-you-can’t-read-the-words-through-the-tears-in-your-eyes funny. (Some call this therapy, and I’m inclined to agree.)Though aimed at writers, this book is full of sage advice and razor-edged honesty for the average joe. If you’re a writer–and I claim to be one–it’s more than a few anecdotes and good advice; it’s a lifeline in the thrashing seas of rough-draftdom, a foothold on the sands of jealousy and vain ambition. Anne makes it clear that writing must be pursued for something other than mere publication. (Though, to be honest, I know she’s just trying to let the majority of us down easy.) Writing is about letting go, growing, facing truths, and holding on. I’m hooked on Lamott. She slaps me in the face with her startling revelations, nudges me in the ribs with her unpredictable humor, and prods my frozen little writer’s hands back into action with warm compassion. This book won’t solve the mechanical aspects of my writing, or lead me on the path of structural excellence, but it will spark my creativity, free my characters to be true to themselves, and, ultimately, shake me from my doldrums back into the writing mode.In a society addicted to mindless facts and information, “Bird by Bird” reminds us–writers or otherwise–that it’s all about heart. Heart and mind and soul dancing together, even if they step all over each other’s feet.

If there’s a better book to read when you’re doubting yourselfand your writing ability, I don’t know what it is. IF YOU WANT TOWRITE by Brenda Ueland may be more profound, but it’s not as funny… I don’t think Lamott copied Ueland at all. Both books are wonders, Ueland’s more spiritual or mystical–i.e. how to express your own unique self and write your truth–and Lamott’s more worldy–how to get your rear in gear and start producing copy. Lamott’s chapter on crumby first drafts lets you know you must start somewhere and can’t do that if you’re constantly criticizng and editing yourself. And she is so right–once you have a beginning, you can make it better..and better…and better. She doesn’t really tell you how to do that in very specific terms, but for that there’s great sourcebooks like SELF EDITING FOR FICTON WRITERS and ON WRITING WELL, which more than cover the job. Bird by Bird may be short on craft, but it’s long on motivation, humor, and practical ways to get yourself writing.

When the Game Was Ours
From the moment these two players took the court on opposing sides, they engaged in a fierce physical and psychological battle. Their uncommonly competitive relationship came to symbolize the most compelling rivalry in the NBA. These were the basketball epics of the 1980s–Celtics vs Lakers, East vs West, physical vs finesse, Old School vs Showtime, even white vs black. Each pushed the other to greatness–together Bird and Johnson collected 8 NBA Championships, and 6 MVP awards and helped save the floundering NBA at its most critical time. When it started they were bitter rivals, but along the way they became lifelong friends. With intimate, fly-on-the-wall detail, When the Game Was Ours transports readers to this electric era of basketball and reveals for the first time the inner workings of two players dead set on besting one another. From the heady days of trading championships to the darker days of injury and illness, we come to understand Larry’s obsessive devotion to winning and how his demons drove him on the court. We hear him talk with candor about playing through chronic pain and its truly exacting toll. In Magic we see a young, invincible star struggle with the sting of defeat, not just as a player but as a team leader. We are there the moment he learns he’s contracted HIV and hear in his own words how that devastating news impacted his relationships in basketball and beyond. But always, in both cases, we see them prevail. A compelling, up-close-and-personal portrait of basketball’s most inimitable duo, When the Game Was Ours is a reevaluation of three decades in counterpoint. It is also a rollicking ride through professional basketball’s best times.Amazon Exclusive: Bill Walton Reviews When the Game Was Ours

When the Game Was Ours Reviews

I thought it was really cool to see a book about the rivalry that brought us a new and improved NBA that was Larry Bird and Ervin Magic Johnson. The two, as you will see, could not be further apart in so many was as they were. They almost played on the same college team, you find out, but then they play against each other for years in so many venues.
The book is layed out so we have a target date or highlight date, whether it be the college finals, an allstar game or the NBA finals, you see each event as a time in history, from both of their perspectives and from those of others with a bit of history between events and from each of their lives. You learn a lot without brutal details about our two heroes. And really for some of us, that is just what they were. I hed the chance to talk to Ervin one day on the phone, really. He was a down to earth guy, and I thanked him for what he and Larry had done to the game. He said he heard that a lot. Interestingly, that was in 95, before he returned to play again. Who would have known that it truly was what got the game of Basketball back to what it could be.
Jackie MacMullan does a great job weaving and bobbing through the lives of both. Passing back and forth between the two of them and scoring with each chapter. (sorry, I just could not help myself).
This should go down as one of the most intriguing and best reads about pro basketball and even sports. This is a great book for those who experienced it, those who are interested in the game and even kids interested in the sport. It is written tastefully so young kids could read it.
These were two men of character that started off as fierce rivals and went on to mutual respect and became great friends. To see all of this behind the scenes and how the two of them kept their game great is a treat.
Highly recommend.

For twenty-years basketball fans have heard and read from many sources what the true feelings of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were like as these two unbelievably competitive men changed the game of basketball. They were so totally different… and yet at the core… so totally alike. For the first time Larry and Magic collaborate to reveal what they “really” thought about each other through each and every step of their game-changing careers. It’s like having a split screen with Magic on one side and Larry on the other as they share their childhoods… college… and NBA careers… and even their post playing lives. At the end of each historical milepost the split screen becomes one as both Hall of Famers summarize in real-time… adding comments that are more sage with the blessing of age and maturity.
When Magic and his Michigan State team met Larry’s Indiana State team for the National Championship Game in 1979 it drew a 24.1 Nielsen rating, “THE HIGHEST IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL HISTORY, A NOTEWORTHY MILESTONE THAT REMAINED UNTOUCHED THREE DECADES LATER.” From that time forward Larry and Magic were forever linked-compared-and-intertwined for the rest of their lives. A mutual hatred breeded mutual respect and in the end a lifetime friendship. Along the way they were universally credited with saving the NBA. “IN 1979 THE LEAGUES FOUR-YEAR DEAL WITH CBS WAS WORTH MILLION. BY 2002 THE LEAGUE HAD INKED A SIX-YEAR DEAL WITH ABC, ESPN, AND TNT VALUED AT 4.6 BILLION.” The author’s pull no punches as they both admit that starting in the aftermath of their NCAA showdown that one hated the other. After Magic won the NBA championship in his rookie year Bird now admits extreme jealousy. Though neither one admitted it in those days they each followed the others stats and accomplishments like madmen possessed. As some individual awards went Bird’s way… Johnson felt slighted. But through it all they both admit this feverish competition between the two made them both rise to athletic levels they would never have reached without the burning desire to outdo the other. And then in 1985 they both agreed to take part in the now infamous Converse commercial entitled “CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON”… and Magic came to Larry’s home in Indiana… and the miraculous took place. These two fiery… hating… competitors… started to talk and found out they were very much alike… and their childhoods were extremely similar. And then in the unlikeliest of scenario’s they became extremely good friends. They realized then… and now… that their lives were forever interlaced. Magic couldn’t go anywhere without people asking how Larry was doing… and Larry couldn’t go anywhere without being asked how Magic was doing.
Any true basketball fan will not only share the exhilaration of the glorious pinnacles of the author’s careers… but you will also feel the grief as their careers come to an end. And of course Magic becoming HIV positive. The definitive epitome of the friendship that had been born through these competitive games… was when Magic demanded that Larry be contacted and made aware of his disease before it was made public. Along with the accepted fact that Bird and Magic saved the NBA… potential readers will also truly enjoy the coverage regarding Michael Jordan taking the baton and leading the NBA to reach even higher goals. The detailed story telling regarding the 1992 Olympic Basketball Dream Team is a must read for all basketball fans. A scene between the greatest players in the world at the Olympic Village during a game of pool with Jordan, Magic, Larry, Barkley, Ewing… and others… as they banter between themselves as to who “was” the greatest… “is” the greatest… and “would-have” been the greatest… if time had been shuffled differently… is one of the greatest behind the scenes look at these famous stars I’ve ever come across. It is akin to the stalking of lions in the jungle as they contemplate changing the pecking order.
The rabid rivalry that was Magic and Bird raised each of these legendary “team-first” ballplayers to levels… that in this retrospection… they publicly agree… they would have never reached without the other. It’s left to the imagination how much higher Jordan may have gone if he had had his own Larry or Magic in their prime. Basketball is forever greater because of this rivalry… and no discussion of one… will ever take place without a discussion of the other… for all eternity!

DRINKING BIRD
Drinking Bird A rather dumb looking 6″ bird with a felt covered head and has plastic feet. Worse, he cannot get his fill of water. You buy the drinks. Fluid inside condenses from the evaporative cooling of the water off the bird’s beak, making it top heavy and dunking it back into the water. The condensate rejoins the liquid pool in the bird’s bulb, and he tips up again. Process continues indefinitely. It works, but it’s not any more than moderately well made, and not any more than moderately priced. WARNING! The fluid and dye inside the bird can permanently stain, and the bird’s glass body can easily be broken. Children are fascinated by the bobbing bird, and the educational possibilities are great. But they should watch it, not fondle it!!

DRINKING BIRD Reviews

The Drinking Bird is made of glass….glad we got two as my 11-year old dropped and shattered Bird #1!! After adjusting properly, the bird drank continuously for HOURS until I physically stopped it….
What worked??
1. Used a glass 4″ tall..filled to the brim with water
2. Soaked the Bird’s Head completely with water
3. Adjusted the metal collar height (gently as glass is fragile!)
4. Most importantly….I slightly bent the metal “wings” (that rest on the plastic “legs”) on the metal collar (gently) to position the bird’s distance from the glass (plastic “feet”/base keeps it a minimum distance from the glass of water.
Once he starts drinking, it keeps on going!!

They say you can’t go back, but with these you can. They are just as I remember them when I got one at the Boston Science Museum as a kid.

Brome 1024 Squirrel Buster Plus Wild Bird Feeder with Cardinal Perch Ring Reviews

This feeder is the best I’ve had, and I have had a bunch. It has a huge capacity so you don’t have to fill it very often. It is almost impossible for squirrels to stand on and if they manage to get a foothold their weight closes the feeding ports so they can’t get anything. You can adjust it to exclude large birds such as starlings and grackles. When it needs to be cleaned you just put it in the dishwasher. When an especially crafty squirrel tried to chew it’s way in to my feeder I informed Brome about the damage and they sent me a replacement part for free! Squirrel busters have a lifetime warranty against squirrel damage. I have had mine for about 3 years and couldn’t be happier with it. If you only have one bird feeder in your life this should be the one.

This is the second Squirrel Buster feeder I’ve bought. I’ve had the first one for over five years and am replacing an old feeder (not a Squirrel Buster). This feeder is the best feeder made to discourage squirrels from emptying seed. Our area is loaded with squirrels and they have tried everything to get to the seed in the feeder, with no luck. One time they did damage the feeding ports in an attempt to get at the sunflower seeds and when I contacted the company, they sent me a new part at no charge. Another time these darned squirrels actually chewed on the metal lid and again, the company sent me a new part. I would not hesitate to recommend this feeder to anyone, especially if you are bothered by raiding squirrels. The feeder is well made and holds quite a bit of seed (I use sunflower seeds in it)and is very easy to clean. It is well worth the cost. The customer service I’ve received from this company is absolutely top-notch.

The Thorn Birds
Based on the bestselling novel, the film follows a priest and his struggle between his calling and his carnal lusts. The second most-watched miniseries (after Roots) of all time, The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough, the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart, whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover, Meggie Cleary (Rachel Ward), while seeking advancement in his clergyman career. The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie’s tough aunt), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, and Mare Winningham. Chamberlain, who was something of the king of the miniseries form at the time, is very good in the lead, as is the often-underrated Ward. Their affair is indeed irresistible to watch, which proves to be true, too, of the story’s thick weave of church politics, forbidden desire, social change over decades, and family secrets. –Tom Keogh

The Thorn Birds Reviews

Ok… first, I have to say that Tom Keogh, whose review sits above as the standard review for Amazon, needs to actually watch the movie. Opinion is one thing, but at least get the facts correct. Rachel Ward plays Meggie Cleary (not Meggie Carson) and Barbara Stanwyck plays her greedy, manipulative, devil-incarnate aunt…. not her grandmother. That aside…this still stands…for me at least, as the greatest mini-series ever! And, considering all the recent scandal surrounding the Catholic Church today, it is as relevant and thought provoking today as it was in 1983 when so many were incenced not only by the content and plot of the movie, but by its time of airing (holy week-the days leading up to Easter). The cast is perfection and makes an already engaging story about the inner battles of an ambitious Austrailan Priest (played by Richard Chamberlain who never looked more gorgeous)even more amazing. Not a single miscast here. The performances are phenomenal. This is a movie with that searing edge of forbidden love and the torment of unrequited love combined with a heavy dose of romance, great characters, manipulation, greed, and the progress of a family torn apart by various maladies. The chemistry between the all the characters is so apparent. It is a movie that makes you think and makes you cheer for something that is deliciously guilt-ridden. In case you couldn’t tell… I love this movie!!!!!!! This is a guilty pleasure to the highest degree… like the most decadent Godiva chocolate if it could be made in the form of a film. Buy it…keep it… watch it over and over. Perfect for a girls only party or a rainy saturday afternoon. Get some snacks… sit back and know that 8 hours will seem to float by.

I first saw this mini series in 1983 when it first aired, I was 13! I watched each subsequent rerun and taped it. Even though I had it on tape I would always watch it again if it’s on, like on the Love Stories channel. In a word, “unforgettable”. If you are into romance novels, this is the ultimate romance. Forget the sappy, brainless, shallow Harlequins, this is the real thing. If you are into romance but haven’t read this book or seen the movie, you are missing out on something magical. Trust me, buy the book, rent the movie or buy it. You won’t regret it. You won’t ever forget it.The acting is first rate. I disagree with the previous reviewer about Rachel Ward, she does fine, in fact once you watch it you’ll want these people to be real. You’ll want to visit Drogheda! Barbara Stanwyck is amazing as the vindictive Mary Carson. The birthday party is one of many high points. Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, Piper Laurie, Christopher Plummer, Mare Winningham, Earl Holliman, Richard Kiley, Jean Simmons, Bryan Brown are all excellent. The story starts out in 1920′s Australia and begins with Paddy Cleary and his family, including the very young Meggie Cleary (played by Sydney Penny of All My Children!) arriving at the Gilley Station, Father Ralph meets them and sees Meggie for the first time. I’ll leave it at that. From there, you won’t want to get up to go to the bathroom or get a snack until you have to change tapes. This is, in my opinion, the best mini-series ever on TV by far. The impact of this story was so great that they made a second mini-series in 1996 to satisfy fans. This time, without any of the original actors except Richard Chamberlain. It’s not horrible but doesn’t have any of the magic of the original. Even with that, you’ll want to see “The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years” after you’ve watched the original.Disregard the two reviews by the “Aussie’s”. They are completely off base and misinformed. First, the movie was filmed in AUSTRALIA, not OREGON. I live in Oregon and no where in Oregon looks like that. I remember reading that it was indeed filmed in Australia. Second, the accents are fine. Third, no Aussie actors? Bryan Brown anyone? The Thorn Birds is unforgettable. Take a rainy Saturday and watch it alone. The day will go by so fast, it will be dark when it ends and you won’t have noticed but you’ll have a big smile on your face and tears in your eyes at the end, if only because it is the end of the story.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local powhitetrash. At eight years old and back at her mothers side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her ageand has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns about love for herself and the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.
Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a modern American classic that will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read.In this first of five volumes of autobiography, poet Maya Angelou recounts a youth filled with disappointment, frustration, tragedy, and finally hard-won independence. Sent at a young age to live with her grandmother in Arkansas, Angelou learned a great deal from this exceptional woman and the tightly knit black community there. These very lessons carried her throughout the hardships she endured later in life, including a tragic occurrence while visiting her mother in St. Louis and her formative years spent in California–where an unwanted pregnancy changed her life forever. Marvelously told, with Angelou’s “gift for language and observation,” this “remarkable autobiography by an equally remarkable black woman from Arkansas captures, indelibly, a world of which most Americans are shamefully ignorant.”

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Reviews

In a poetic, yet detatched way, Maya Angelou captures the heart of her struggles growing up female and Black during the Depression. Her style and description draw in the reader and keep her spellbound even during the most painful scenes. You feel deeply for the author and her little brother as they drift through their lives living for a bit of affection. Neglected by their divorced parents, Maya and her brother get sent to Arkansas at ages 4 and 5 to live with their grandma and handicapped uncle. Although life is hard and love not demonstrated, Maya learns much from her grandma and uncle. The theme of this book is the quest for the child to be loved by the adult. Maya feels inferior. She feels ugly and compares herself to her magical brother Bailey. Both children are starved for true affection and daydream a white movie actress on the screen is their long lost mother.Maya and her brother are eventually united with “Mother Dear” in St.Louis when she is eight. Unfortunately Mother’s boyfriend begins to abuse Maya(…). This is graphically portrayed in the book. Maya’s feelings of not belonging and not being truly loved are compounded after the abuse. I admire all the autobiographical books by Ms.Angelou. She has achieved a lot in her life for a person who started out in such a sad situation. This book should be read and re-read.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by Maya Angelou, is the first volume in this author’s extraordinary series of autobiographical narratives. “I Know…” begins with her childhood and takes us into her young womanhood. This book has, since its publication, become a beloved contemporary classic of African-American literature. After their parents’ separation, young Marguerite (her given name) and her brother, Bailey, are sent to live with their strong-willed grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas, deep in the segregated South. Angelou also describes her time spent with her other grandmother in St. Louis, as well as her young adulthood in San Francisco. The overall time period of the book overlaps that of World War II.”I Know…” offers important insights into the world of racial segregation, and painfully records the toll taken by racism in its various forms. Also powerful and important is Angelou’s recollection of surviving a brutal sexual assault when she was a child. Angelou recalls vividly the authors who made an impact on her during her childhood and young adulthood: James Weldon Johnson, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, and others. The book concludes with her sexual awakening as a young woman.”I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” is an American classic which has lost none of its power in the 30 years since it first appeared. Angelou’s prose is direct and personal, and marked with passages of wit and beauty. For scholars of African-American literature, women’s studies, or literary autobiography, this is an essential volume.

The Birds (Collector’s Edition)
AS BEAUTIFUL BLONDE MELANIE DANIELS ROLLS INTO BODEGA BAY INPURSUIT OF ELIGIBLE BACHELOR MITCH BRENNER, SHE IS INEXPLICABLY ATTACKED BY A SEAGULL. SUDDENLY THOUSANDS OF BIRDS ARE FLOCKING INTO TOWN, PREYING ON SCHOOLCHILDREN AND RESIDENTS IN A TERRIFYING SERIES OF ATTACKS. CONTAINS MANY BONUS FEATURES.Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: “Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes.” From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. The Birds follows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), as she travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) she’s only just met. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds, and Hitchcock’s skill at staging action is brought to the fore. Beyond the superb effects, however, The Birds is also one of Hitchcock’s most psychologically complicated scenarios, a tense study of violence, loneliness, and complacency. What really gets under your skin are not the bird skirmishes but the anxiety and the eerie quiet between attacks. The director elevated an unknown model, Tippi Hedren (mother of Melanie Griffith), to being his latest cool, blond leading lady, an experience that was not always easy on the much-pecked Ms. Hedren. Still, she returned for the next Hitchcock picture, the underrated Marnie. Treated with scant attention by serious critics in 1963, The Birds has grown into a classic and–despite the sci-fi trappings–one of Hitchcock’s most serious films. –Robert Horton

The Birds (Collector’s Edition) Reviews

Hitchcock’s macabre classic finally gets its due on this DVD Collector’s Edition. The film, which by turns thrills (the various bird attacks) and amuses (the frequently bantering dialogue), is presented in all its widescreen glory — an important consideration for Hitchcock enthusiasts, given the director’s meticulous planning of his films’ visual compositions. “The Birds” features some great cinematography, a nerve-wracking soundtrack, and some finely wrought performances (particularly those of Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Ethel Griffies); all are well-served by the film-to-DVD transfer. There are a wealth of bonus features, including newsreel footage of Hitchcock and Hedren publicizing the film, an extensive stills gallery, and a fascinating behind the scenes production documentary. Especially intriguing are the ad-libbed screen test clips pairing Hedren with “Psycho” player Martin Balsam while Hitchcock provides verbal instructions off-camera! All in all, a most welcome addition to my DVD collection, and one I’m pleased to recommend for yours.

Alfred Hitchcock apparently spent the better part of two years trying to find subject matter that he felt would be worthy of a follow up film after 1960′s PSYCHO. He bought Daphne duMaurier’s short story, “The Birds”, and very quickly decided that he would only retain the title, and the bird attack plot point. Evan Hunter and Hitchcock crafted the screenplay structure, and after a staggering amount of technical pre-production, Hitchcock made THE BIRDS. It opened to huge acclaim from the public, if not critics, and is one of the master of suspense’s best remembered pictures. As it should be. And with the stunning new DVD edition, this terrific movie at last gets the home video treatment it so richly deserves. The transfer is immaculately sharp and clear, letterboxed at the 1.85:1 ratio used for theatrical exhibition, and the mono digital sound is clean and vibrant. The letterboxing actually gives the film more breathing room, and some of the sequences, especially the complex technical passages such as the attack on the school, and the spectacular attack on the town, have a visceral punch that’s ratcheted up by the clarity of the digital image and sound. Don’t be put off by the many sodium process shots that were necessitated by the demands of the screenplay; they are perfectly cut into the film, and give the movie a primitive realism that is perfectly in keeping with Hitchcock’s stylized view of reality. His films are all designed within an inch of their lives, and the audience is all the better for it.The extras on this collector’s edition are quite valuable. A featurette entitled “All About The Birds” presents interviews with actors Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Veronica Cartwright, along with various technical personnel, and is lively and full of information about the film’s production. Also featured are Tippi’s screen test, production notes, a trailer, and web links. This is one package that beautifully showcases a film which gets better each time you see it.

She’s intelligent-she aced AP physics; athletic-a former state-ranked tennis doubles champion; and beautiful. She is, in short, everything her mother, Elizabeth, hoped she could be. The family’s move to Landsdale, with stepfather James in tow, hadn’t been as bumpy as Elizabeth feared.
But as the school year draws to a close, there are disturbing signs that the life Rosie claims to be leading is a sham, and that Elizabeth’s hopes for her daughter to remain immune from the pull of the darker impulses of drugs and alcohol are dashed. Slowly and against their will, Elizabeth and James are forced to confront the fact that Rosie has been lying to them-and that her deceptions will have profound consequences.
This is Anne Lamott’s most honest and heartrending novel yet, exploring our human quest for connection and salvation as it reveals the traps that can befall all of us.

Imperfect Birds: A Novel Reviews

I love Anne Lamott’s nonfiction works. During one particularly difficult year of my life I listened to her entire canon of nonfiction on CD. That, and a particularly dedicated therapist, helped pull me through the year safely. But her fiction? Not so much.
Teenaged Rosie is at the heart of ‘Imperfect Birds.’ A good student, off and on good daughter, and generally honest kid, in the summer between her junior and senior years in high school she starts falling in with the wrong crowd. From the relative “innocence” of experimenting with marijuana, alcohol and a few harder drugs, Rosie suddenly begins to spiral out of control. In her favor, she has two parents (including a step-father, as Rosie’s biological father died), and a whole support system of people who love her.
Something about Lamott’s fiction lacks the spark of herself, a certain impish quality, that seems to flow so freely in her nonfiction. I didn’t care about Rosie. Lamott didn’t make me feel invested in her character. By the 3/4 mark I was bored, just waiting for it to end. And when it did I breathed a sigh of relief.
I found the book so disappointing, so blah in writing style, and don’t plan on reading more of her fiction. Though I’ll never hesitate to pick up her nonfiction. I recommend that without hesitation.

Elizabeth lives with her husband James and her daughter Rosie in Marin County, leading a seemingly idyllic-seeming life. But everyone has secrets. In this continuation of her 1997 book “Rosie,” Lamott employs a blend of sensuality infused with spirituality, bringing each scene to life with a vivid clarity of sight, smell and insight. Facing her senior year in high school, Rosie, most of all, is duplicitous to her parents who trust her judgment and believe her lies. Since this is a novel about people who care about one another, the conflicts are within the family unit, with the mother-daughter relationship primarily at risk. By taking Rosie at face value, the marital union is jeopardized, but as it becomes more apparent that action must be taken if they all are to survive as a family, resolution and redemption are sought in an unconventional way. The resolution of the family crisis is handled with wit and perspective, and never tips over into Jodi Picoult territory. Given the Marin setting and the fact that the characters while not particularly affluent have means beyond the common solution, not all readers will sympathize with Rosie and her situation. She’s fortunate to have such loving parents who don’t give up on her. She is also fortunate in her friendships. The bonds between her and her two closest friends are treated with heart and warmth, displaying a loyalty enviable to anyone.
Although this book continues Anne Lamott’s 1997 novel, it can be real as a standalone since there are enough references to the former book which enlighten a new reader and refresh the memory of someone who’s memories may had dimmed.

Gund Sesame Street Big Bird 14″ Plush Reviews

Gund has excellent quality, and though it did not come in a box (really my only complaint) Big Bird is definely the softest stuff animal I have ever come along. I bought almost all the main characters for Christmas for my daughter and when we watch Sesame Street they are alot of fun to play along with, even for adults. With the free shipping this same item actually ended up cheaper than other less expensive Big Birds at different sites.

My daughter just loves this big bird, it is quality made and has stood up to being tossed around quite a lot. Its not too big that its difficult to carry around and I like that his character is associated as being educational. I would purchase this again.
